Bangladesh National Museum is the largest museum and museum in Bangladesh. It is a national institution established for the purpose of collecting, preserving, exhibiting and researching historical, archaeological, anthropological, artistic and natural history artifacts of Bangladesh. It started its journey under the name of Dhaka Museum in 1913 during the British rule. Presently the museum is situated in a four storied building on 8.63 acres of land in Shahbagh, the heart of the capital Dhaka city. The museum has 44 exhibition rooms, three auditoriums, a rich library and two temporary exhibition rooms. Besides, the National Museum has four branch museums under its control. These are Osmani Museum in Sylhet, Ahsan Manzil Museum in Dhaka, Zia Smriti Museum in Chittagong and Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Museum in Mymensingh.
